What We're About
Asian Business Health, Safety and Environment Network (ABHSEN) is a Non-profit Organisation, was created in response to the lack of positive health and safety culture among Asian businesses in New Zealand. Despite the recent improvement of the health and safety culture in New Zealand, vulnerable communities such as Asian workers still face significant risks in the workplace. Migrant workers comprise the majority of the workforce in high-risk businesses and are often unaware of their health and safety rights and liabilities.
ABHSEN recognises that safety concerns are often overlooked in Asian work cultures due to strong internal hierarchies that discourage workers from speaking up. This, coupled with a lack of safety control measures, highlights the need for increased awareness among business owners on the importance of managing health and safety in the workplace.

Time to Act
We feel that it's time to break the cycle of neglecting safety awareness in Asian businesses, ABHSEN is striving to improve communication between companies, industry leaders, regulators, and other relevant parties, encouraging proactive risk management through support and engagement with business owners and workers. Our network also fosters collaboration with H&S practitioners from diverse cultures to better comprehend the situation of front-line workers and provide them with the support to suit their needs.

Our Mission
Our mission is to transform the perception of Asian businesses and workers' health and safety performance in New Zealand by promoting a robust health and safety culture. We envision a future where Asian workers are known for their high safety awareness and where every organisation wants to work with ABHSEN-registered businesses. We aim to achieve this by providing comprehensive education to workers and business owners, encouraging proactive risk management, and facilitating collaboration between businesses, industry leaders, and regulators. Through our efforts, we strive to create safer and healthier workplaces for all, and ultimately eliminate the negative stereotypes associated with Asian businesses in the health and safety realm.
